Earlier this Saturday, blog was thrilled to attend the first ever ALDHA West Chute Winter Ruck in Chute Locks, Oregon. Throughout the day, guests received gear help and advice from the GG Path Ambassadors and other UL experts. Novice backpackers submitted their provides to examination and scrutiny by advanced UL hikers, as well as the results were not always very! But this turned out to be an extremely helpful physical exercise for aspiring long hikers.
Later in the working day, the topics of Snow travel and river crossings were tackled by Carolyn “Ravensong” Burkhart and ALDHA West president Whitney “Allgood” LaRuffa. Trail meals and resupply logistics were covered by Philip “Freefall” Sanderson and Scotland “SoFar” Forbes. If perhaps there’s one thing which we took away from the weekend – other than a wholesome longing to claim back out on the path – it’s that almost always there is room for improvement and always more abilities and techniques to excel at. A blog knows that mother nature is a school, every hike is a lessons.
Below are a few of my favorite takeaways and reminders from the weekend’s demonstrations:
Hiking is rad! All of us are ready for winter to finish!
PERCENTAGE Thru-hikers are utilizing smart phone software with sat nav practically exclusively these days they usually highly recommend them.
Halfmile’s free maps and apps seem to be the opinion favorite among smartphone users, but Guthooks software as well seemed to quite popular.
Smartphone GPS was said to be likewise accurate as classic GPS units by many people experts.
Never count on water cashes when planning wasteland hiking trips. Piece of writing is pretty noticeable, but it’s definitely good to remember.
Most travellers could really make use of a winter mountaineering category with ice-cubes axe self court skills . Acquire an ice responsable and learn how to use this. You’re going to come across snow slopes, particularly if you’re hiking inside the spring or street to redemption, and ice responsable skills could save your valuable life.
Learning to use a food dehydrator can certainly help to spice up trail foods . Dehydrated greens, fruits, and complete meals will help put nutrition and style while still keeping weight low.
Bounce cardboard boxes aren’t nearly seeing that common as they utilized to be among PERCENTAGE thru-hikers.
I really need to get away and hike even more sections of the Continental Split Trail . Photos from the CDT glimpse absolutely stunning, particularly the Wind River Selection in Wyoming and Glacier National Playground.
It’s not about kit. It’s all about escaping . there and having an adventure.
